Work, Wander, Repeat
Let’s get one thing straight—I’m not here to sell you some “travel hack” that requires thousands of credit card points or requires you to buy a confusingly expensive online course. I AM here to tell you how I actually have lived for free (yes, seriously), while traveling the world without draining my savings, and intend to continue doing so.
But here’s the secret: it’s not just about finding a cheat code. It’s about finding a new way to travel. I’m talking slow, intentional, deeply meaningful travel. The kind that changes your entire perspective—and costs you nothing once you take the leap.
For me, that magic came from one beautifully simple, game-changing platform: Worldpackers.
What Is Worldpackers?
Think of Worldpackers as the love child of a job board, a global Airbnb, and a soul-searching retreat. It’s a work exchange platform that connects curious travelers with hosts all around the world. In exchange for a few hours of work and a little energy per day—think helping at a hostel, creating content, gardening, teaching yoga—you get free accommodation, oftentimes meals, people to connect with, time to breathe, and more, in some of the most incredible places on earth.
And when I say “work,” I don’t mean backbreaking labor or long hours. I really do mean things such as:
- Organizing and leading events for a surf school in Spain
- Assisting the staff of a safari hostel in India
- Teaching English in a cozy village school in Thailand
- Creating social media content for a wellness center in Portugal (yep, did that)
To be fully transparent, you pay a yearly fee in order to utilize all that the Worldpackers platform offers, but there are NO hidden fees, and it really is a one-time-a-year expense.
I chose the cheapest plan called “Solo Trips,” which costs $59 and gives you full access to the site and all of the experiences within it (the other plans give you additional perks, but nothing that felt necessary for me.)
Pro tip #1: Many Worldpackers users have taken to social media as affiliates, and it’s incredibly easy to find a discount code on TikTok or Instagram to knock the price of your membership down even further.
For further transparency: no, this platform does not pay for the cost of your flights or any other external expenses. It DOES give you access to the experiences that allow you to freely live, eat, and enjoy parts of the world you never dreamt of being able to afford to spend time in.
My Experience
I’ve most recently used WorldPackers to work at a juice detox and yoga retreat in Portugal, and not only did it allow me to extend my travels, it also gave me a deeper sense of community, purpose, and belonging.
Tucked away in a mountain valley just 20 minutes inland from Lagos, I spent over a month working at Moinhos Velhos (the retreat) in southern Portugal. My “job” was pressing fresh juices in the morning, helping with random tasks around the property when needed, occasionally cooking meals for the community, and my favorite part- managing and scaling the retreat’s social media accounts.
I was surrounded by a beautifully intentional community—people from all over the world who became instant friends through shared meals, yoga and meditation workshops, and a shared love for travel and our pursuit of creative endeavours.
In case you’re wondering if I was just isolated from the world for this month, no, I wasn’t. Wifi was not a foreign concept, and connection to society was very much at my fingertips. In fact, I was just a short drive from the entire Algarve coastline, and our company car made it even easier to get there. On my days off, I explored sea-carved cliffs, golden beaches, and storybook towns, always returning “home” to the retreat, where a cozy bed, good food, and meaningful connection were waiting for me, free of charge.
No, this experience wasn’t a 5-star hotel vacation; rather, it was a soul-altering blend of work, wonder, and wild freedom that I truthfully wouldn’t trade for anything.
***If I were seeking information from an active Worldpackers user, I would want the following transparency and clarification:
Following my arrival at the retreat in Lagos, I quite literally only paid for things on my off-days because I chose to go on long day trips into nearby cities and paid for my own Ubers/Bolts, souvenirs, and snacks. Outside of these unnecessary costs that I CHOSE to pay but did not have to, I didn’t spend a dime during my time living on the retreat because of this work exchange through Worldpackers.
Why It Works (and Why It’s Not Just a Budget Hack)
Worldpackers isn’t just a quick fix for cheap travel. It’s a shift in mindset. You trade dollars for experience, and in return, you get:
- Deep cultural immersion
- Community connection
- Purpose-driven routines
- The freedom to travel longer and farther
It’s not just about “traveling on a budget”—it’s about traveling differently. More sustainably. More intentionally. More immersively.
Now, you may still feel a bit of doubt and fear around this whole concept, and I can certainly understand that. I suggest thoroughly looking into the platform for yourself and determining if the types of opportunities are worthwhile to you and something you might seek to be involved in. I’ll give you a bit of a heads up/spoiler alert/bit of inside scoop: the platform takes extensive efforts to keep its volunteers safe and give you peace of mind and support before, during, and after your trip. As someone who was embarking on her first fully solo trip, feeling safe and secure in my decision was of utmost importance to me. My confidence stemmed directly from the open communication and transparency that Worldpackers enables, as well as the personal testimonies I paid close attention to before living out my own beautiful testimony.
How to Get Started:
- Create a Worldpackers account and detailed profile: Make it personal—hosts love seeing your story!
- Pick your dream destination + interests + skill match: There are filters for everything.
- Apply to opportunities: Send messages that show your personality.
- Get accepted, pack light, and start your Worldpackers story: You’re about to embark on a beautiful and impactful journey!
Pro tip #2: The platform has a peer-reviewed system, so you can read honest reviews and message past volunteers before committing.
Final Thoughts: Take the Leap and Travel Immersively
If you’ve ever dreamed of traveling longer, deeper, and more meaningfully without breaking the bank, Worldpackers might just be your golden ticket.
Prior to taking the leap of purchasing my membership, and especially prior to booking a flight to show up at a random yoga retreat, I did my research and fact-checking so you don’t have to. I initially heard about Worldpackers from travel influencers that I adore, then the platform’s name suddenly seemed to follow me everywhere in conversation.
In case you’re wondering what pushed me to actually trust and try out this platform for myself, I do have an answer. The moment that led me to take the leap occurred on the beach in Positano at sunset when a lovely guy around my age came over and befriended my family. He hailed from the United States but had family in Praiano (a town nearby on the coast) and therefore was living in Italy for a few months. We began to speak about traveling with deeper meaning and cultural immersion, and he told us about his Worldpackers exchange in Thailand, where he worked at an ethical elephant sanctuary. His words immediately turned my thoughts into a giant “what are you waiting for?” neon sign in my mind.
I came home from that trip, purchased my membership, applied for a bunch of experiences in various places, got a lot of “yes’s,” then picked the experience that aligned most with what I was seeking at the time and would allow me to gain further social media management experience.
I didn’t just “save money”, I gained experiences money couldn’t buy. Slow mornings in a mountain valley. Sunset walks with strangers-turned-friends from all parts of the world. Creative freedom. Space to breathe. Time to be.
Worldpackers gave me something I didn’t even know I was looking for—a way to travel that felt true to who I am. One where I could slow down, create, contribute, and feel completely at home halfway across the world.
If you’re craving more than just a vacation, if you want connection, adventure, and purpose rolled into one, this might be your sign.
So no, free travel isn’t a myth. You just need to know where to look.
Sincerely,
SB
